PROPERTIES, INC.<br>BRICKELL PARK, INC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And those are just the active corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are quite a few inactive companies, formed in the 1980s and 1990s, but which have been dissolved in the last decade.&nbsp; Judging by the names of those now defunct companies (Yoram Izhak Clothing, Inc., for one), it appears that Yoram Izhak was at one time in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewish-languages.org\/jewish-english-lexicon\/words\/477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>schmatta<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(Yiddish for clothing) business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sources tell me Izhak was under investigation for \u201cshady business dealings\u201d back then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, he\u2019s back in business as a real estate developer and investor, conducting business out of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.votersopinion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/MIA-PROPERTIES-WARRANTY-DEED.pdf\">North Miami office building<\/a>&nbsp;owned by his company&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/search.sunbiz.org\/Inquiry\/CorporationSearch\/SearchResultDetail\/EntityName\/domp-p00000065399-e95de998-7145-4d20-b5f1-0b512f1147a7\/m.i.a.%20properties\/Page1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M.I.A. Properties, Inc.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoram Izhak is also back in the news after laying low for a couple of years.&nbsp; As reported on September 18, 2014 by Local 10\u2019s Bob Norman in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/sherifftied-political-committee-accepts-money-from-convicted-felon\/28120422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sheriff-tied political committee accepts money from convicted felon<\/em><\/a>, Yoram Izhak is a major donor for Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel\u2019s re-election campaign.&nbsp; He reported, \u201cOne of those leading the money list is developer Yoram Izhak, who is listed on campaign filings for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/search.sunbiz.org\/Inquiry\/CorporationSearch\/SearchResultDetail\/EntityName\/domnp-n14000000764-d39bede4-7a5a-45a8-a9f7-0df0e0534bd9\/citizens%20for%20effective%20law%20enforcement\/Page1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cCitizens for Effective Law Enforcement\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;as&nbsp;giving&nbsp;$5,000 personally, with another $15,000 coming from companies listed at the building he owns in North Miami.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, Izhak previously had a run-in with the Broward County Sheriff\u2019s Office when he attempted to board a Delta Airlines flight to JFK International Airport with a loaded gun strapped to his ankle.&nbsp; A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/fullscreen\/80588842?access_key=key-1z19jwjgbonvln9tkqsj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Criminal Complaint<\/a>&nbsp;filed with the United States District Court on October 10, 2002 claims \u201cthe defendant did attempt to get on an aircraft \u2026 having on or about him or his property a concealed dangerous weapon that would be accessible to the individual in flight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later on December 6, 2004, Yoram Izhak pleaded guilty to tax evasion.&nbsp; Of that incident, Local 10\u2019s Bob Norman reported, \u201c\u2026Izhak is also a convicted felon who was indicted 10 years ago in a massive&nbsp;organized crime case.&nbsp; The crime ring was known as \u201cThe Corporation\u201d or the \u201cCuban Mafia\u201d and was allegedly involved in cocaine trafficking, arson, gambling and murder. The indictment alleges Izhak was involved in money laundering for the group.&nbsp;Racketeering and illegal gambling charges filed against him were dropped. He agreed to cooperate with the federal government and pleaded guilty to&nbsp;tax evasion for a sentence of probation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irony struck again when he was sentenced to 36 months\u2019 worth of probation and court ordered to refrain from possessing \u201ca firearm, destructive devise, or any other dangerous weapon,\u201d according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/fullscreen\/80588805?access_key=key-1jax8ub4pz06sozxd7m3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judgment in a Criminal Case<\/a>, filed in the United States District Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also states that defendant Yoram Izhak \u201cshall not commit another federal, state or local crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the many properties acquired by Izhak was the Northside Shopping Center located at NW 79th Street and 27th Avenue.&nbsp; Fifty percent of the shopping center is owned by Izhak\u2019s company, M.I.A. Properties, Inc., which is also the landlord of an office rented to Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime.&nbsp; A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.miaminewtimes.com\/riptide\/2012\/02\/despite_jean_monestimes_confli.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miami New Times article dated February 6, 2012<\/a>&nbsp;reported that a month earlier the Commission voted to approve a $3 million dollar renovation grant to the Northside Shopping Center despite Izhak\u2019s criminal track record.&nbsp; When the New Times questioned Izhak\u2019s attorney, Glenn Widom, he quickly came to his client\u2019s defense, stating, \u201cI can see no reasonable relationship between his criminal charges and Northside Centre other than subjecting Mr. Izhak and his family to embarrassment.&nbsp; This is simply not newsworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not newsworthy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, the Commission deemed it newsworthy enough because, as reported by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.miaminewtimes.com\/riptide\/2012\/02\/miami-dade_commissioners_nix_3.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miami New Times on February 7, 2012<\/a>, Monestime&nbsp;had \u201cto pull his name off and withhold his vote at the last minute\u201d after the Ethics Commission \u201cruled he had a conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ya think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his political ties with the Broward County Sheriff, Yoram Izhak\u2019s name came up again most recently in a Miami Herald article,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/north-miami\/article2174053.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>MOCA director proposes new board<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp; Babacar M\u2019Bow, the museum\u2019s executive director, proposed the appointment of fourteen individuals \u201cto function as interim board members.\u201d&nbsp; The Herald reported, \u201cOne of the proposed board members, real estate developer and investor Yoram Izhak, said through an attorney Friday that he will reject the nomination after the Miami Herald asked about a past tax evasion charge and airport security arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North Miami\u2019s Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened its fall season tonight, has already had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.votersopinion.com\/2014\/09\/25\/who-is-yoram-izhak-and-why-should-we-care\/His%20effort%20has%20already%20hit%20a%20roadblock.%20One%20of%20the%20proposed%20board%20members,%20real%20estate%20developer%20and%20investor%20Yoram%20Izhak,%20said%20through%20an%20attorney%20Friday%20that%20he%20will%20reject%20the%20nomination%20after%20the%20Miami%20Herald%20asked%20about%20a%20past%20tax%20evasion%20charge%20and%20airport%20security%20arrest.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enough troubles of late<\/a>.&nbsp; Mr. M\u2019Bow told the Herald that \u201cany red flags in nominees\u2019 backgrounds were not a cause for concern,\u201d that he had the City Attorney\u2019s consent, and that he was only interested in the \u201cartistic viewpoint\u201d of his nominees.&nbsp; Fortunately for MOCA, Izhak had the good sense to disassociate himself with the museum\u2019s struggle to reinvent itself and maintain its reputation in the art world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel would have also done well to avoid the controversial Yoram Izhak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then again, this isn\u2019t Israel\u2019s first encounter with convicted felons and other questionable characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/randompixels.blogspot.com\/2013\/07\/q-what-happens-when-you-turn-over-rock.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Random Pixels reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>A little more than a week after taking office \u2013 and even before he\u2019d learned the location of all the elevators at BSO headquarters \u2013 Israel raised more than a few eyebrows when he invited Ken Jenne, the disgraced former Broward sheriff and convicted felon, to visit him in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.sun-sentinel.com\/2013-01-18\/news\/fl-ken-jenne-felon-20130118_1_sheriff-jenne-granite-countertops-and-windowsills-ken-jenne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cthe $1.6 million office space Jenne used public funds to redecorate.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>(As an aside, RP also noted that Bob Norman, the Local 10 reporter who divulged the Izhak-Scott campaign connection, was the same journalist who reported that Israel took \u201ca five-day luxury cruise to the Bahamas on&nbsp;<strong>a $35 million super-yacht<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2026 paid for by the sheriff\u2019s largest campaign donor, construction magnate Robert Pereira.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither Sheriff Israel nor Yoram Izhak would agree to an interview by Norman, who reported:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Late Wednesday, [Izhak\u2019s attorney] Widom denied in a letter that Izhak had given the money at all to the sheriff, despite the fact that it was reported in filings to the federal government by Citizens for Effective Law Enforcement, including one contribution in Izhak\u2019s name and two in companies listed at a building he owns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is simply a mistake,\u201d wrote Widom.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Izhak\u2019s lawyer appears to have lied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Shocking<\/em>, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After nearly a decade of keeping a low profile, North Miami developer\/investor Yoram Izhak has recently found himself back in the spotlight.&nbsp; Perhaps he would have done well to stay under the radar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miami-Dade Commissioner Jean Monestime nearly committed political suicide two years ago with his grant sponsorship.&nbsp; Fortunately, his career was saved by the Ethics Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know, I can\u2019t believe I just wrote that, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Miami-Dade County Commissioners should also be commended for refusing to do business with a convicted felon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s quite possible, however, that Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel won\u2019t take a cue from the Miami-Dade County Commission.&nbsp; As Bob Norman reported, \u201cthere is no indication the sheriff is going to return the money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all this negative publicity, I would not be surprised if the low-information voters of Broward County let Scott Israel keep his job as Top Dog of the Broward Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, despite my initial concerns to the contrary, this could be a blogger\u2019s paradise after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephanie Kienzle<br>\u201cSpreading the Wealth\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the third time in as many days, I\u2019ve heard the name Yoram Izhak.&nbsp;
